EDMONTON – For the second time this season, Kadyn Chabot has been named the Canada West BioSteel men's hockey player of the week.
The third-year MacEwan Griffins forward scored three goals and added two assists in a two-game weekend series sweep of the Trinity Western Spartans last Friday and Saturday.
He becomes the second Griffins men's hockey player to earn the honour twice in a Canada West season, following Ethan Strang, who accomplished the feat during the 2023/24 season.
It's also the third CW men's hockey player of the week honour for the Griffins in 2025/26.
"It's very impressive," said Griffins head coach Zack Dailey. "It's something we knew he was capable of and I'm happy he's getting the recognition because he's been very important to our team and I think he's showed he's one of the top guys in the league, as well."
In Friday's 7-4 win over Trinity Western, Chabot scored the third goal of the game for the Griffins to break the program's single Canada West season record that he shared with Strang, moving past him with 13 tallies in 2025/26. He also added two assists in the contest.

That's No. 14 of the season for Kadyn Chabot as he opens the scoring off a nifty steal and behind-the-back pass from Sam Simard.

Chabot then scored twice more in Saturday's 6-3 win to move to 15 goals on the campaign, which is just one shy of Canada West goals leader Chantz Petruic of Saskatchewan. He's also at 26 points on the campaign, which is tied for third in Canada West and is just one short of Strang's program record 27 set in 2023/24.
"I just think he has a little bit of chemistry with his linemates," said Dailey of Chabot's impressive start to 2026. "He's been with (Sam) Simard for a while, so they have that familiarity.
"Then just his mentality of being a shot-first player. That's something I talked to him about over the break is, especially on the powerplay, he thought he was shooting too many pucks, but in my opinion I thought he needed to shoot more.
"He's got an attack mentality because he does have a very good shot. That definitely helps our group."
With Chabot's selection as a Canada West athlete of the week for his sport, the Griffins are now up to seven POWs in 2025/26, which is the most ever for MacEwan Athletics, surpassing the five that Griffins student-athletes received in 2023/24.
Chabot has two, while teammate Dwayne Jean Jr. has also earned a men's hockey POW. Griffins women's soccer players Grace Mwasalla and Raeghan McCarthy, women's hockey goaltender Taya Currie and women's basketball forward Unity Obasuyi have also received the honour this season.
The Griffins men's hockey team is on a bye week but will host the Chinese National Team in an exhibition game on Wednesday (7 p.m., Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV). Admission is free.
