EDMONTON – Kadyn Chabot scored a hat trick, Vincent Scott broke a program record with four assists and goaltender Zac Onyskiw was outstanding in getting the Griffins into overtime on Friday night vs. UBC.
But the hero moment belonged to defenceman Logan Dowhaniuk, who criss-crossed in the offensive zone with Chabot in 3-on-3 OT play and wired a laser past Brett Mirwald to deliver a 5-4 victory for the MacEwan Griffins.
"Me and Chabby just intertwined there. I just kept the puck and saw a lane, and figured I might as well shoot this. I got off a pretty good shot. I took it and it went in, so it was good," said Dowhaniuk, who beat Mirwald under the glove, over the pad.

It was the Griffins' second victory over the Thunderbirds in three tries so far this season and snapped UBC's red-hot nine-game winning streak.
"Obviously, it's exciting to get a win against a very good hockey team that we played," said Griffins head coach Zack Dailey. "It was a good game there and I was really impressed with the group, just the resiliency. There were a couple times we went down, but I thought we did a great job of responding and continuing to push."
Both Chabot and Scott had four-point nights, which matches the program's single game record in Canada West play, previously accomplished by three others.
Scott's four assists is the most by a Griffin in a Canada West game. He directly set up two of Chabot's goals, drew the second assist on another one, and also passed the puck to Dowhaniuk for the OT winner.

"Everything he touched turned to gold today," said Scott of Chabot. "He had three goals. Keep feeding him and good things happen. We ended up having a good game."
That line – Chabot, Scott and Sam Simard – was on fire offensively, but Dailey was just as impressed with their defensive play.
"We put that line together with those three guys with the expectation that they could play against top lines and produce," said Dailey. "The challenge tonight was the other team's top line, and I thought they did a pretty darn good job against those guys. Impressed with those guys. Offensively was great, but I thought they had great defensive nights, as well."
Then we come to rookie goalie Onyskiw, who had his best game as a Griffin, making 40 saves, including one with 42 seconds left on Ty Thorpe that is a highlight of the year candidate as he stretched into the full splits to deny him on a back door broken play that tipped off traffic right to his tape.
How about this heroic stop by Zac Onyskiw in the dying seconds!

There are no words to properly describe it, but head coach Zack Dailey was asked to try in his post-game interview.
"Outrageous" is what he said.

"I honestly have no idea," he said when asked how he made the stop that got the Griffins into overtime. "I just put everything out there and stopped it."
Dailey was asked to describe it.
"Outrageous, let's say that," he marvelled. "He was very solid for us today. Made some huge saves, especially in the third period to either keep us in it or keep it close. The breakaway save in overtime (also on Thorpe). I was really impressed with his game tonight. He did a great job."
UBC's Cyle McNabb opened the scoring 3:13 into the second period before Chabot went to work less than three minutes later. The third-year Cranbrook, B.C. product finished off a gorgeous tic-tac-toe play from Scott and Dowhaniuk on a 5-on-3 powerplay.

Kadyn Chabot has two!
It's also his eighth of the season on a tip off Tyson Kowaluk's point shot to put the @MacEwanGriffins up 2-1 on the @ubctbirds.#GriffNation pic.twitter.com/6X6zclEs4G
With UBC pressing and holding the zone after a powerplay, Liam Kindree tied the game on a shot through traffic 4:28 into the third.
But there was Chabot again, slamming home a one-timer pass from Scott, who collected a rebound and went behind the net before finding him. It's the third time a Griffins player has scored a hat trick in a Canada West game.

Kadyn Chabot becomes the third @MacEwanGriffins player to score a hat trick in a @CanadaWest game, firing home a Vinny Scott pass to put MacEwan up 3-2 on @ubctbirds. Scott now has three assists, the ninth Griffin to do so in a CW regular season game.#GriffNation pic.twitter.com/AOvclbwhT8
However, UBC got goals from Thorpe (on a short-handed breakaway) and Josh Williams on a powerplay (net front crash) to take a 4-3 lead into the dying minutes.
That's when the upstart Griffins simply wouldn't go away as Dwayne Jean Jr. found Brett Bamber streaking to the net back side off his point position and sent a hard pass that he tipped in five-hole.

"We have some guys who are very gifted offensively and they were able to display that," said Dailey. "Chabot with three goals is unbelievable, Jeaner making great plays, Logan with a great goal in overtime. So, happy to see those guys get rewarded for some really good play."
With the result, the Griffins climbed above .500 for the first time since opening weekend to 6-5-2, dropping UBC to 9-1-1. The teams will meet again on Saturday (3 p.m., Downtown Community Arena, Canada West TV).
