EDMONTON – What immediately stands out about the first player to be announced in Katherine Adams' 2026 Griffins women's basketball recruiting class is her size.
Standing at 6-foot-5, M.E. Lazerte product Samira Muon has big-time potential to impact the inside game once she joins the Griffins for her rookie Canada West season in 2026-27.
"We're really excited to be adding her size, length and depth at this position to our program," said Adams.
As with most rookies, the forward/centre will need some time to get acclimated to the increase in level from high school, but Adams sees a very high ceiling for Muon.
"We're really excited about her growth and development," she said. "Already she's quite strong, she has nice, soft hands at the rim. "She's just such a big presence inside at both ends – obviously offensively as a target that people have to pay attention to – and defensively as a rim protector. That's a lot of length to have to go around."
It was a former Griffin who alerted Adams to Muon back when she was first learning the game.
"I first learned about her when she was in Grade 9," Adams recounted. "(Former Griffins men's basketball player) Jesse Trussler was actually coaching her and he said, 'hey, here's a kid you should know about and keep an eye on.'
"We think the potential of what she could bring to the program is huge," added Adams. "She's a hard worker, she's just so keen to get in the gym and work.
"We had her out for a training session and our girls were really impressed with her strength and physicality, not backing away from the moment. So, we're really excited about what she brings."
