EDMONTON – After the best weekend of her career, which included back-to-back double doubles, Unity Obasuyi has been named the Canada West BioSteel women's basketball player of the week.
She's the second player in program history to earn the honour, following Noelle Kilbreath who won it in 2024, although five other MacEwan women's basketball players have earned a Canada West star of the week before the individual sport award began.
It's also the first time in MacEwan history that two Griffins athletes from difference sports have won it in the same week, as Kadyn Chabot also won the men's hockey honour.
"She's demonstrated time and time again that she can score the basketball and score the basketball in a lot of different ways," said Griffins head coach Katherine Adams. "I think this weekend, what was so impressive about her performance is she found other ways to contribute – 10 rebounds and 11 rebounds – and a couple steals in there.
"It just solidifies the impact and the value that she brings overall to our team."
Obasuyi finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's 78-70 loss at Mount Royal on a sizzling 50% field goal percentage. She became the second player in MacEwan's Canada West history to hit seven three-pointers in game (her 7-for-11 mark is just shy of Kendall Lydon's 7-for-10 program record).
Monster game from Unity Obasuyi as she buckets 30 points to go along with 10 rebounds, but @MacEwanGriffins come up short, falling 78-70 to @MRUCougars in #YYC.#GriffNation pic.twitter.com/9UCOKwMs97

"She had opportunity," said Adams of her success from beyond the arc. "She puts in so much work that every time she shoots it, you think it's going in. The reps that she gets in the gym, shooting those shots, it's not the first time she's shooting it. So, it's no surprise that every time she shoots it, it has a chance to go in.
"It's just a night where her teammates were able to find her in the moments when she was open. Obviously when you have seven, you're going to have that, but she also had a few moments where she was able to create for herself off the dribble, too. Just an impressive performance overall."
In Saturday's 61-56 loss, Obasuyi scored a game-high 22 points, adding 11 boards. Both games were the first two double doubles of her career.
"Especially in that game on Friday, she mounted a huge comeback for us," said Adams. "Her teammates did a great job finding her and she did what she does best."
The Griffins are back in action at home this weekend when cross-town rival Alberta visits the David Atkinson Gym for matches on Friday (5 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m., both Canada West TV).
