EDMONTON – Building an imposing wall at the net of big middle blockers, the Griffins women's volleyball team has added another intriguing prospect to the position group in 6-foot-3 Calgarian Mienke Olsen.
The product of the Dinos Volleyball Club will join a Griffins team with multiple players over 6-feet.
"What stood out to us about Mienke was her team-first attitude and eagerness to learn," said Griffins head coach Chris Wandler. "She has all the tools to become a high-level middle in this conference, and we're excited to support her development."
Wandler noted she will initially be a developmental prospect for the Griffins as she comes in and learns what the Canada West level is all about.
"She needs to get a little bit stronger and get her speed and arm swing a little bit faster," said Wandler. "But just like the twins (previously announced recruits Addison and Alyssa Piekema), we see a lot of upside and potential."
Wandler noted the Dinos Volleyball Club is excellent at development, so he has already noticed advancement in her game.
"I noticed her last year a little bit and her improvement to this year was big," he said. "Her fitness level improved so much over this year. It got her on the court a little bit more.
"Being in that club, you're pushed by your teammates and your coaches because they're all really good, so, that elevates your level of play," he added. "That's exactly the type of environment it is here. You're pushed every day to be a little bit better. The club is a really good developmental club, so she's got a good skill-set."
