EDMONTON – Continuing to check off milestones in her career, Grace Mwasalla gets to add one more: for the fifth time she has been named Canada West women's soccer BioSteel player of the week, the conference announced Tuesday.
It's the most by any Griffins student-athlete since MacEwan joined the conference in 2014.
This one is sure to be extra special for the fifth-year forward as she completed a memorable two goal weekend that moved her into a tie for 10th in Canada West all-time goal-scoring.
"That's awesome to hear," said Griffins head coach Dean Cordeiro. "I know the team will be happy for her and I know she'll be super pumped.
"It's cool to hear that five is the most in program history. She missed half the (2023) season with an injury and she played last season with a torn ACL. It's remarkable to think about it."
Mwasalla was also named Canada West women's soccer player of the week Oct. 26, 2021, Sept. 20, 2022, Oct. 11, 2022, and Aug. 29, 2023.
Men's hockey alum Ethan Strang is the only other Griffins student-athlete to win more than one conference player of the week honours, accomplishing the feat twice.

Mwasalla scored the 33rd goal of her career in Saturday's 6-0 win over Regina and had nine shots in that game – the third-most ever by a Griffins women's soccer player in a Canada West match.
On Sunday, she notched No. 34 in a 1-0 win over Saskatchewan to move into a tie for 10th all-time with Trinity Western's Krista Gomeringer (2012-16) and into a tie for fourth in career game-winners with 11.

"Nobody's worked harder than her, especially coming back from the injury," said Cordeiro. "This last nine-month window, she's been foot on the gas and just getting herself back so she can be at her best. She's an inspiration for this team. She's one of our captains and leaders and she leaves it out there every single time."
Mwasalla is only four goals back of the top five, a spot currently shared at 38 by Victoria's Amelie Mercier (2001-05) and Manitoba's Caley Miskimmin (2005-09).
The all-time Canada West goals leader is UBC's Janine Frazao, who had 51 from 2009-13, while UBC's Danielle Steer (46 from 2017-19, 2021-22), Saskatchewan's Elizabeth Hudon (44 from 2007-11) and UBC's Jasmin Dhanda (43 from 2013-17) round out the top five.
"Now the question is what's she going to get to? We're just excited to see that journey in her fifth and final season," said Cordeiro. "We've got eight important regular season games left, none more important than this weekend. Hopefully she'll keep climbing.
"I'm super proud of her with everything she's been able to do in her illustrious career up to this point."
