Sandman Player of the Month: McCarthy's huge August nets first honours of season
MacEwan Athletics
EDMONTON – Women's soccer midfielder Raeghan McCarthy has been named Sandman Signature Downtown Edmonton Player of the Month for August after scoring three times in two regular season games for the Griffins.
It's the first monthly award of the 2025-26 Athletics season that honours MacEwan student-athletes and comes with a free night's stay at the Sandman Signature Downtown Edmonton hotel.
Making her return to the Griffins for the first time in four years, McCarthy scored two goals in her first half back in MacEwan's Aug. 29 season-opening 3-1 victory over Manitoba.
She added her third goal of the young season in another 3-1 win on Saturday.
"She didn't skip a beat," said Griffins head coach Dean Cordeiro. "She came back and was just as impactful when she scored in that national final for us when we won in 2021. It was just great to see."
McCarthy also played the full 90 minutes in both games, finishing with 11 shots, including eight on goal, which is the highest SOG/game rate in Canada West. Her goals total is tied for second in the conference.
"Undoubtedly, those goals she scored were next level – what quality on the finishes," said Cordeiro. "That's what Raeghan can do. But even more than the goals is her ability to break up plays, stick tackles and just be such a difference-maker away from the ball when we're trying to press and do different things.
"She's just the complete package."
McCarthy and the Griffins will hit the road this weekend for matches at Calgary (Saturday, 12 p.m.) and at Mount Royal (Sunday, 1 p.m., both Canada West TV).
