EDMONTON – If you break a record, you really would like it to be on a highlight-reel goal, rather than have it bounce off your knee and in.
Allee Isley got her wish when she scored a pretty tally in the third period on Saturday, chipping Kali MacDonald's cross-seam pass under the bar to become the new program record holder for career Canada West points.
"It's really cool," said Isley, who broke a tie she had at the top with former Griffin Joie Simon. "It means a lot. I'm glad our team is able to produce some more offence. Some of the games this year have been really good for that. It means a lot."
Unfortunately, the record didn't come in a win as the Griffins were toppled 5-2 by the visiting Trinity Western Spartans.
At the time, though, Isley's goal – scored 3:49 into the third period on the powerplay – pulled the Griffins within one to 3-2.
"The first (powerplay) opportunity we had today was a little bit stagnant," said Griffins head coach Chris Leeming. "We talked about getting more movement and that's how we created that look. Just going to the dirty areas.
"She went to the net and was able to tap that one in. That's what I liked about it. We were able to execute on our powerplay."

While Trinity Western beat the Griffins 4-0 on Friday, MacEwan had more Grade A chances. On Saturday, though, the Spartans left little doubt who was the better team on the night, outshooting the Griffins 36-19.
"I think it comes down to the execution of our details and the frequency that we're able to get that stuff done," said Leeming. "Yesterday's game, I know we out-chanced them in terms of Grade A scoring chances, which is something we've been focusing on.
"We just didn't really have our whole game tonight overall."
It looked like it was going to be a good one as Rian Santos opened the scoring for MacEwan just 2:17 into the game as Claire Hobbs hit her with a back door pass from behind the net.

But it wasn't long after that Kailey Ledoux got started on a three-point night for the Spartans, scoring twice in less than three minutes late in the first period.
Sadie Isfeld skated the puck coast to coast and dished to Ledoux, who wired it past Lindsey Johnson blocker side at 14:40 of the first.
Then, on a play the Griffins would probably like to have back, Chloe Reid won an offensive zone faceoff forward to Kyra McDonald, who beat her check and fed Ledoux, who had snuck back door for a tap in.
Trinity Western went up 3-1 at 9:47 of the second period when Olivia Leier tipped Kasey Ditner's point shot past a screened Johnson with Ledoux drawing the second assist.
Isley made things interesting on her goal, the 28th point of her Canada West career to break the record.
"Powerplay we've been struggling a little bit this year, so we've been trying to find more seams to hit and things like that – move the puck north, west, every direction and try to hit a seam," she said. "We've been working on that in practice a lot recently and also on one-timers. I think Kori (Paterson) passed it over to Kali and Kali hit me on the seam there. I was calling for it, and it worked out really well. It went into the back of the net. That's all that matters."
But any chance of a MacEwan comeback was snuffed out by Kara Yackel's goal to make it 4-2 with 3:52 left. Isfeld then hit an empty net from her own end 25 seconds later.
Johnson finished with 31 saves for the Griffins, while Kate Fawcett stopped 17 of 19 for the Spartans.
The Griffins will wrap up the 2025-26 season with a home-and-home series against cross-town rival Alberta on Feb. 13-14.
