EDMONTON – Adding more talent to a sparkling 2020 recruiting class, the MacEwan Griffins women's soccer team has landed a second member of the Saskatchewan Regional Excellence (REX) program.
Joining Renee DeCorby on the Griffins next season is Brenna Paquin, head coach Dean Cordeiro announced on Tuesday.
"Brenna's got good size and she's a very technical player," he said. "She's a good scorer, but also very good creator. She can play anywhere in midfield or the front three.
"She's a top player in the Saskatchewan REX program, and she comes along with Renee as players who played in that program under Yiannis Tsalatsidis, who has done an amazing job developing these kids."
Paquin, a product of Saskatoon-based Hollandia Soccer Club, was a member of Team Saskatchewan at the 2015 Western Pacific Challenge in Vancouver. She has been in the Saskatchewan REX program since 2017.
"Brenna's in great form right now," said Cordeiro. "I got to see her at the Snow Cup (at the U of A in January) when she played for Saskatchewan REX. She set up a few goals and also scored herself."
Additionally, Paquin has seen success in other sports. She was a provincial silver medalist in high school cross-country running and then broke district records in both the 800 and 1500 in track and field.
"She's another player that we're super excited for what she can contribute as a first-year athlete who will fit into our system nicely with her tendencies and the way she plays the game," said Cordeiro.
