EDMONTON – The potential for an increased offensive attack continues to build for the MacEwan Griffins men's soccer team.
After their goals per game total slipped from 1.50 in 2021 to 0.86 in 2022, the Griffins have been on the front foot in a bid to add to their offence in 2023.
On Wednesday, head coach Adam Loga announced talented attacking midfielder Felix Guité Cano has committed to joining the Griffins for the 2023 Canada West campaign.
Born in Petén, Guatemala, Cano moved to Canada at a young age and has spent 15 years perfecting his position on the pitch. The 5-foot-10 midfielder comes to the Griffins off a three-year stint playing semi-pro in Germany for Turkspor Nürnberg in the first team Landesliga.
"He's a clever player, very technically sound," said Loga. "He comes in with a lot of experience. We were able to get some recruits who are a little bit older. He's one of them coming in as a mature student. He's 22. He's going to bring some maturity and experience on and off the field – something you definitely want as a coach."
Cano's resume also includes spending 2018-19 with FC Edmonton's U20 team, where he earned call-ups and training opportunities with the first team. He made the top 22 list at the Canadian Premier League Combine, received the attacking MVP award at the First Touch Football Combine and won a Man of the Match award at the OPSM Pro Combine.
Currently, Cano is playing USL League Two (semi-pro) in Michigan this summer before coming to MacEwan.
"He's pretty savvy, brings some of that flair and creativity that we sometimes lack, especially in the attacking third," said Loga. "We're looking forward to have him in the lineup."
