Record 97 Griffins student-athletes earn 2020-21 U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours

EDMONTON – A record number of MacEwan student athletes have been recognized as U SPORTS Academic All-Canadians for the 2020-21 season.
A total of 97 Griffins earned the honour, shattering the previous record of 55 set during the 2019-20 season.
"Our student-athletes continually set the standard for academic excellence, and to have a record number of them recognized for this achievement as Academic All-Canadians is outstanding," said MacEwan Director of Athletics Joel Mrak.
"This recognition is a testament to their dedication hard work both on the court and in the classroom, and they are very deserving of this honour."
A caveat to 2020-21's record total is MacEwan has more U SPORTS programs than ever before with men's and women's hockey joining the Canada West conference.
Taking that into account, however, 2020-21 still sets a new record. Even if you add the number of Griffins' ACAC Scholar Academic award winners to the 2019-20 total – a season where MacEwan still had golf, curling, cross country and indoor track programs – there were 95 award winners.
Former women's volleyball student-athlete Lauren Holmes (2015-20) holds the school record for the most career U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian honours with five, but there are now 11 with four as six student-athletes joined that exclusive club in 2020-21 – Hannah Gibb and Shannon Majeau (women's basketball), Kylie Schubert and Carly Weber (women's volleyball), Samantha Gouveia (women's soccer) and Tyler Jodoin (men's volleyball).
To qualify, Griffins student-athletes must have maintained a GPA of at least 3.3 during the 2020-21 season.
