EDMONTON – Two years ago, MacEwan Griffins women's soccer head coach Dean Cordeiro had U SPORTS champion added to his title after a special season of show-stopping moments that included beating Trinity Western for the 2021 national title.
A few months later, he had a head-turning moment at the Premier College Showcase in B.C. while scouting for the next wave of Griffins talent.
As he watched Langley United's Paige Colby light up the midfield, he quickly realized she has the full array of skills he covets in a player.
And the rest is history – Colby will kick-start a promising U SPORTS career with the Griffins in 2024-25.
"Paige really turned heads at the showcase," Cordeiro said. "She's got an amazing profile – great size, excellent on the ball, shut down defender and she is a real leader. She can score goals, she can create, and she makes everybody around her better.
"We have big plans for Paige and I'm so glad she chose to be a Griffin."
In addition to playing for her high school G.W. Graham Secondary and for Langley United in the BCSPL, Colby has also long been selected for Team B.C. and is accustomed to going against some of the best players in the country at her age level.
"She can really play all three positions in midfield," said Cordeiro. "CDM (centre defensive midfield) is really intriguing for us, but she can also play centre mid position and attacking mid. She is so versatile."
Cordeiro sees Colby as an immediate contributor for the Griffins, who are coming off a Prairie Division-best 10-2-2 record and looking to return to the U SPORTS Championship for the first time in three years.
"I'm so excited for this year's recruiting class and I know that Paige will be an impactful player for us," said Cordeiro.
